Prayer is one of the most powerful ways we connect with God, but true prayer is impossible without the Holy Spirit. While many claim to pray, not all understand or experience the depth of communion that comes from praying in or with the Spirit.
Jesus taught us that the Holy Spirit glorifies Him by making His truths known to us (John 16:14). Similarly, Moses prayed, “If you are pleased with me, teach me your ways so I may know you…” (Exodus 33:13). Without the Spirit, we may attempt prayer in our own strength—but we’ll fall into coldness, formality, and spiritual blindness.
When a person becomes aware of their sin and brokenness, it’s often too overwhelming to call God “Father.” Fear, guilt, and shame can hold us back. But the Holy Spirit gives us the confidence and faith to come boldly before God.
As Paul wrote in Galatians 4:6,
“Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, ‘Abba, Father.’”
Only those who have experienced God’s grace can call upon Him knowingly and believingly. Not everyone who recites the Lord’s Prayer truly understands what it means to say “Our Father.” Many do so without any real relationship with God.
A Sincere Cry vs. Formal Words
One sincere word—“Father”—uttered in the strength of the Holy Spirit, is worth more than a thousand memorized and repeated prayers said without feeling. Real prayer flows from a relationship, not a ritual.
True children of God pray out of conviction and dependence on His Spirit. They don’t merely go through motions but understand their need for grace, forgiveness, and spiritual guidance.

Are We Pretending or Believing?
Many outwardly religious people claim God as their Father but have never truly known Him. Jesus spoke strongly against this kind of hypocrisy:
“If God were your Father, you would love me… You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desire…” (John 8:42-44)
God desires sincerity, not pretense. He calls us to examine ourselves—not just what we say, but how we live and who we trust.
How to Approach God the Right Way
To truly pray the way God desires:
- Acknowledge your sin and need for mercy.
- Rely on the Holy Spirit to guide your heart and words.
- Come in faith, believing that through Jesus, you are God’s child.
- Pray with sincerity, not just words.
A Prayer from the Heart
“Oh Father! Forgive me for all the times I’ve taken for granted the blessing of calling You ‘Abba.’ Help me never to come to You carelessly but with a heart full of gratitude for Your grace. Let me be led daily by Your Spirit, in sincerity and truth. Amen.”
Final Thought
Prayer is not about performance; it’s about relationship. When we pray with the help of the Holy Spirit, we enter into true communion with our loving Father. Let us not settle for surface-level prayer—but go deeper, guided by the Spirit who helps us in our weakness.
