Prayer is a sincere, sensible, affectionate pouring out of the heart or soul to God—through Christ, in the strength and assistance of the Holy Spirit. We pray for what God has promised, in line with His Word, for the good of the Church, and with submission to His will.
Why Prayer Must Be Through Christ
We must add “through Christ” to every prayer to ensure it is genuine. Even eloquent and passionate prayers are incomplete without Jesus, because Christ is the Way.
“I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
— John 14:6
Jesus also said:
“You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.”
— John 14:14

Examples from Scripture
Daniel prayed in the name of the Lord:
“For your sake, O Lord, look with favour on your desolate sanctuary.” — Daniel 9:17
David also prayed:
“For the sake of your name, O Lord, forgive my iniquity.” — Psalm 25:11
True Prayer Requires Knowing Christ
Not all who mention Christ’s name truly pray through Him. The hardest part of prayer is coming to God through Christ, which requires faith and a spiritual understanding of who Jesus is.
“Without faith it is impossible to please God…” — Hebrews 11:6
“Teach me your ways so I may know you…” — Exodus 33:13
Christ Must Be Revealed
Only the Father reveals the Son to our hearts:
“No one knows the Son except the Father… and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.” — Matthew 11:27
David often referred to Christ as his shield, tower, rock, and refuge, because he knew how to approach God through Christ.
Faith Brings Us into Union with Christ
God told Abraham:
“Do not be afraid Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward.” — Genesis 15:1
When we put our faith in Christ, we are born again, joined to Him, and made members of His body.
“No one can enter the Kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit.” — John 3:5
“We are members of His body.” — Ephesians 5:30
Our Access to God Is Through Christ’s Merits
Now, we can approach God based on Christ’s blood, righteousness, and intercession. We are accepted in Him:
“Accepted in the Beloved.” — Ephesians 1:6
Because you are united with Christ, you can pour out your heart before God in prayer, assured that He hears and responds.
